  • Companies that list jobs on this board most often have a formal process for receiving and selecting candidates. Generally, HR Managers start with identifying the needs of the position they are trying to fill. They typically define this information in the job description. For jobseekers, it is critical to know that job descriptions are the basis for the position - it defines the duties and responsibilities of the position. It should not be considered all-inclusive. Rather, a basis for the position. Once you have identified a new job, applying is your first step toward letting the employer know that you are interested, and gives you the opportunity to make a first impression. Jobseekers should complete an application honestly and in full. Include important details, which make you qualified for the position. Now is your time to show why you are a good candidate.

  • Understanding your qualifications and experience can help make the most of your job search. But don’t forget about your needs and preferences too. Often, jobseekers don’t clearly communicate their skills and abilities to potential employers effectively. Consequently, this leads to being passed over and develops frustration. What you need is a solid understanding of what you are good at doing, what you love to do, and what you are willing to do for work. Then, describe these things as clearly as possible in a constructed resume. Spend time building this critical document that describes your knowledge, skills, and abilities. If you aren’t a good writer or don’t have a computer, find someone to help. There are tons of community organizations and career counselors out there that love to help. Don’t be afraid to ask. A clear understanding of what makes you the best candidate for the job, often makes a world of difference. Once you have that, search, search, search until you find the one that’s right for you and go get it.

Then use your understanding of the job to communicate why you are the best candidate – through your resume. A resume is not a set-it and forget-it type of tool. You need to sharpen it regularly and use it specifically for the job you want to be considered.

  • We don’t believe “Stand-Out” always means being loud and eccentric. We love these people, but this is Human Resources, where most companies have very clear processes. Often “Stand-Out” in Human Resources means, you followed the process step-by-step and finished ahead of the rest. Are you familiar with the job? Do you meet the qualifications, and did you develop a great resume demonstrating you’re an excellent candidate? Did you submit a complete employment application as required? (And so on and so forth). The point is, being a standout to get noticed is different than being a standout who is the most qualified candidate for the job. Be yourself and add your flare if that’s who you are, but be the best you can be at the details HR Managers look for too. It goes a long way.

  • An interview is not the last step before getting hired, it is the second step to making a good impression. You should prepare as best as you can. You’ve already started with prep by understanding the job description and learning about the company. You’ve clearly developed a good resume and submitted a quality application for employment. This typically means HR now considers you to be generally qualified for the job, but the process goes on. Once you get an interview, being prepared is the best advice we can offer. Know the job, know the company, and most importantly, know yourself. Most HR Managers use initial interviews to sniff out a phony and filter out applicants that don’t meet the company efforts. They also use interviews to continue the comparison of applicants. It is not unusual for a company to interview many candidates for a job, so use yours to put your best foot forward. Be polite, be confident, show up on time, and clearly explain why you’re a great fit. Most importantly, don’t forget to breathe. Interviews can be stressful, but the more prepared you are, the better you will show up for the second impression opportunity.
